8th International Works On Paper Fair Wednesday 25th July Sunday 29th July, 2001 Byron Kennedy Hall, Fox Studios Australia, Moore Park, Sydney. The 8th International Works on Paper Fair (IWOPF 2001) at Fox Studios, Sydney in July this year is an event devoted to the display, discussion, exchange and sale of every conceivable kind of work of art on paper. The Governor of NSW, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, will officially open the Fair on Wednesday July 25 from 6pm. The Art Gallery Society of NSW will co-host the official Gala Opening Night as a special fundraising event towards the acquisition of a work of art for the Art Gallery of NSW collection. The 8th International Works on Paper Fair gives the opportunity to survey the whole range of art on paper and get an idea of its price and scale. All artworks on display are for sale. Dealers from the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia offer an astonishing range of works from prints and drawings, through watercolours to posters, 3-dimensional works and artists books. But it is more than a commercial event. Its larger purpose is the promotion of works on paper, both by bringing the worlds best artists, galleries and dealers together and through its satellite activities. IWOPF will host a one-day symposium on Friday 27th July (across the road from Fox Studios at the UNSW College of Fine Arts). High profile speakers, including keynote speaker, Heinz Holtmann, Chairman of the German Commercial Galleries, will discuss collecting, marketing, buying and producing works of art on paper. There will also be on site demonstrations of printmaking, papermaking, conservation and restoration techniques at the Fair. Six Emerging Artists have been selected from colleges and universities nationally to exhibit their works at the fair. This is the second time that IWOPF has offered post-graduate art students the opportunity to exhibit on their own stand. The chosen artists include two from Australian National University Canberra, three from La Trobe University in Bendigo, and one from the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba. There was a very high standard of work submitted from students all around the country for this exhibition. The Fair is the brainchild of Akky van Ogtrop who moved to Australia from Holland in 1974 and was surprised to find printmaking so much the poor cousin of painting. She worked for ten years in the legendary Stadia Graphics Gallery, the first specialist works on paper gallery in Australia. When Stadia closed in 1988, Akky set up as a dealer. She wished to market works on paper as a credible genre of art. The first IWOPF was in 1989 and now this biennial event is one of the major visual arts events on the Australian calendar. Galleries and print workshops from Paris, Santa Fe, London, Cologne, Korea and Amsterdam will be represented at the Fair alongside galleries from all around Australia. Exhibitors are:
